The Giver pictures a community in which every person and his or her experience is precisely the same. The climate is controlled, and competition has been eliminated in favor of a community in which everyone works only for the common good.
What disadvantages might “sameness” have for a community? Why is diversity so important?

ReplyDeleteThe disadvantages of sameness are that nothing new in life would be discovered. Another problem is that no one would care about family history. Almost everyone looks the same in the community. The reason why diversity is important is because it is what gives use an actual personality. Diversity is what gives use our special interests and features, such as Asperger’s syndrome and need of glasses. Sameness would be a big problem because they would all do the same things except for their jobs. Also, what everyone might do sometimes might not be right. If you are different, you might be able to tell what is right or wrong. If everyone had the same opinion, and they couldn’t tell if it was right or wrong, then they might do the wrong thing. What would also makes sameness bad is that no one would make any special differences in the community for the good of others. Also, they couldn’t have more than two kids, one boy, one girl. It is a very bad way to have a family to restrict having more offspring. Restricting kids is like restricting freedom. Being different, in my opinion, is much better than being the same as everyone else.

ReplyDeleteI think that diversity is very important because that’s what makes everyone unique. If everyone was forced to have only two children, in my opinion, would be a boring life. Things that make us unique in our world are our cultures, our physical features, the ability to pick our own jobs, etc. In “The Giver,” nobody knows their family history, and nobody knows what job the elders will chose for them. Although, in our world people may not think our history is important, it is still quite interesting to learn about. Another disadvantage of being the same is a family has to consist of four people, a mother, a father, a boy, and a girl. I also think that a life in that community wouldn’t be very excited, because you have to receive a bicycle when you are exactly nine years old. I do not think that would be very exciting, because it is more fun to get a bike when you are ready to ride one. I would not like a life like Jonas’s with many rules, because there are many disadvantages of being the same. In my opinion, living in the giver’s community, would not be as fun as living the way we do.

ReplyDeleteThe community has a lack of freedom. They have next to no individuality. There is also no intellectual, or cultural stimulation. The people in the community might not know it, but they are being controlled. I don’t think they even have real feelings. They could just as well be robots. Doing the same things every day would drive me crazy. The community is made in such a way that there are no decisions to be made by the people. All the rules make it almost impossible to be yourself. You have to wonder if anyone in the community second-guesses any of the rules, or if they think it is perfect as it is.

ReplyDeleteIf I lived in "The Giver"'s situation, then there would be many disadvantages with "sameness". For example, if everyone was the same then there would be no single person that would have anything unique about them. From my point of view, if everyone was the same then the world would be a boring place. There would be no special talents someone could share with everyone around them, because everyone would have the same talents. I enjoy being different because you might experience things differently than others, and everyone is unique in their own special way. Diversity is what makes the world how it is this very day. Without diversity nothing would be different. We might as well still be behaving and talking like cave men right now. If diversity didn't take place than we would most likely all look the same, and you wouldn't be able to tell people apart. Another disadvantage about "sameness" in "The Giver" is that you should be able to have as many kids that you would like, and any gender. With one boy and one girl in the family, every family would be the same. Every child would have one more brother/sister. No one would have two brothers or two sisters. I also wouldn't enjoy the fact that you have to share you'r feelings with everyone all the time. The right way, I think would be sharing feelings like when you feel sick etc., not the feelings you recieve when you like a boy/girl etc. Thats why I believe that "sameness" doesn"t make you who you are, but diversity does.

ReplyDeleteSameness has many disadvantages for instance no one would get to learn new cultures. Everyone would be good at the same stuff. Everyone would dress alike, and look alike. We wouldn't learn different holidays. Everyone would have the same opinion. School essays, homework would be alike. As you can see Life with everyone being the same would stink.
Diversity matters a lot. Diversity makes us who we are today and what we will become in the future. Having to share your feelings at the dinner table everyday would stink, especially if you have to share your feelings about a boy. If you had to have two children and two children only, that had to be a boy and a girl wouldn't be fair. You should get to pick the sex of your children and how ever many you want. That is why i think diversity matters so much, because it will make you who you are and who you will become.

ReplyDeleteIn The Giver, every person is just as important and the same as one another, except for The Receiver. Every family is almost exactly the same as the next and no one is unique from each other, such as cultures, tradition or looks. I think it isn’t good because then no one is ever any different from anyone else around you. The sameness of everybody in the community doesn’t let them be their own person or do anything the way they want. They’re being controlled by the elders and that’s the way it’s always been, so they don’t do anything about it. I don’t think anyone in The Giver realizes how important diversity can be. Diversity gives us the leaders of this world, the athletic people, the famous people, and the creative people and so on. Without it, life can be pretty boring. Being forced to have only two children, not even your own, told what job you’re going to have for life, or learn about any kind of history would make me annoyed. Personally, I would complain if we were only allowed to have two children, boy and girl, that aren’t even mine, and I couldn’t name them myself. That would be annoying to me that they weren’t mine and I couldn’t give them a name I chose myself. Being given a job at the age of twelve and having to keep it for life would also annoy me because what if we don’t like the job the elders give us or it doesn’t fit my personality? Learning about either world or family history may seem boring sometimes but it can good to know about at least some of it to help your family or your community later and you can carry on different traditions or holidays that your family celebrated before you were born. These are just some reasons why diversity is important and makes up the people we have today.

ReplyDeleteThere is no diversity in this commuity. Which shows a lact of freedom to do different things. For example different holidays. And diversity is what makes our world so great. In "The Giver" its just the same routine over and over again. That would drive me nuts. And do all of these people think the rules are the right thing to do? You got to think so people have had doubts. If i was there i probably would have questioned a few of those rules. And maybe ask if they can be changed. And importance in that commity is just the same way, should only one person be important. This is why diversity is important.

ReplyDeleteDiversity is very important us because it is apart of our everyday living . If we didn’t have diversity everything would stay the same which is not fun. It can be classified into many different indivuial groups such as your race , religious beliefs, and physical abilitys. Not having diversity we wouldn’t have what we do today such as different gatherings. Diversity is what makes are world unique! If everyhting in the world would be the same no one would have chances to be creative with their ideas in life. Having the same exact routine for your life would be very dull and boring, you would never get to experience what we get to today . You would never have the opportunity to have as many children as Jonas family does. In the book “The Giver” starting your life career at age 12 is not a very fair life you should have to live. Diversity and not having the same life everday is what makes are lives so inthralling . Being different is what makes each and everyone exciting !

ReplyDeleteDiversity is very important in everyday life. It is what lets us know who is who. If we did not have diversity it would be very bad. Nobody would be able to tell apart people from one an other. The world would be in overall chaos. That is only some of the reasons why diversity is important. Another reason why diversity is important is because after only a short time people would become bored. Then life would be very very dull. This is why diversity is important. ReplyDeleteIf all communities had sameness u wouldn't be able to tell the difference between people. Everyone would look, act, and dress the same. If everyone was the same then there wouldn't be a variety of personalities. We wouldn't be able to tell what kind of person someone really is. We wouldn't see the things that people like and dislike because everything is the same. That's why we need diversity. diversity is what gives us all the things like uniqueness. Diversity is important to make the world a more fun place! Without diversity the world would be a boring, dull place. In the giver they don't have much diversity and lots of sameness. So, if you think about a community that has sameness and is perfect mite not be as good as a not so perfect one with diversity and uniqueness.
Diversity in my thought i think it is wrong.Because there should not be a rule on how many child you should have, people should have as many children as they want. You should be aloud to do what we want but there should be some rules but not many. Also i dont think that at the age of 12 you dont celebrate your birthday anymore,i think you should be able to celebrate it as long as you want to.I think that this world should not be like it is. These people should not have to live lives like this.
ReplyDeleteEveryone should be able to do what then want whenever they want.I feel bad for these people, they shouldnt have to live like this. This world should be changed. I hope you like my opion on this.

ReplyDeleteDiversity is very important in are ever day lives. All people are different that is what makes us all individuals. Our differences in religion, race and beliefs is what makes are world unique. God made each and every one of us different that is what makes us all special! Without all of our differences we would think alike and act alike. The USA is very diverse because it is filled with people that come from all over the Earth. Our country is filled with different races and languages which is what makes it special.
We are different in so many ways just like every single snow flake that falls. The difference in the way each person looks is what makes us all unique. Without diversity I don’t think that we could live without it.

ReplyDeleteIf I lived in that kind of community I wound never fit in. To me being different from others is way better than being the same. When you’re the same as everyone else you don’t have anything special about you, except maybe your name. Still that’s not my point. To make a community special you need the arguments, the competition, the problems, the questions, the love, the hate. Everything, you need everything to make something great. Whether it be a huge crime or a small act of kindness, you al ways need it to make something great. The way I see it is that no one should be forced to be the same as someone else. People were made to be different, not the same. If it were me in this book instead of Jonas I would break every rule I had to be “released” from the community. I would rather be on my own in the wilderness than live in a place where I had to be the same as others. Ad I would never stand to have my Child chosen for me, they aren’t even really your child. Or have my brother or sister chosen at random by some weird old dude I don’t even know. In conclusion I would never last a day In a community like that, and I don’t think anyone from here could.
